A young talent from Barcelona and Spain, Lamine Yamal, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Boy accolade for 2024.
The Golden Boy award, bestowed annually by the Italian publication Tuttosport, acknowledges the top under-21 footballer in Europe.
The announcement took place during a live-streamed event and the trophy presentation is scheduled for December 16.
Yamal, a 16-year-old winger who also possesses the Kopa Trophy, emerged as the winner from a strong group of 24 nominees, which included players like Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, Warren Zaïre-Emery from Paris Saint-Germain, and Endrick from Real Madrid. Other notable nominees were Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United, Rico Lewis from Manchester City, and Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.
This victory marks Yamal as the fourth Barcelona player to receive the Golden Boy award, joining the ranks of Lionel Messi (2005), Pedri González (2021), and Gavi (2022).
He is also the fourth Spanish player to be honored, following Pedri, Gavi, Isco Alarcón (Málaga, 2012), and Cesc Fàbregas (Arsenal, 2006).
Yamal’s win highlights his rapid ascent in European football, showcasing his impressive performances for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
The Golden Boy award, established in 2003, is regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades for young footballers, with past recipients including notable players such as Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Wayne Rooney.
