The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital has recently introduced a Center for Advanced Neonatal Studies. This initiative, led by the Department of Paediatrics at LASUTH, aims to establish the hospital as a key player in neonatal healthcare training in Nigeria and the Sub-Saharan region, strengthening its reputation for high-quality healthcare development.
The opening of the center received support from Drager, a renowned global medical technology leader. Drager has pledged to donate cutting-edge equipment and provide technical training to assist LASUTH in its new neonatal programs.
Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, praised the Department of Paediatrics for their dedication to excellent neonatal care. He highlighted the significance of the Center for Advanced Neonatal Studies in LASUTH’s journey toward providing top-level care and acknowledged the Lagos State Government’s efforts to enhance healthcare standards.
Dr. Ayodeji Akinola, a Consultant Neonatologist at LASUTH, detailed the structure of the center, which will include three specialized institutions: the Neonatal Ventilation Academy, the Lagos Neonatal POCUS School, and the Neonatal Invasive Procedure Training. LASUTH is the first Nigerian institution to receive full accreditation for subspecialty training in Neonatology from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The generous equipment donation from Drager, which includes mechanical ventilators, CPAP machines, a bilirubinometer, a pulse oximeter, and an advanced incubator, will improve care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Ayinke House.
Dr. Abdulahi Buhari, the Sales and Applications Manager of West Africa, Medical Division at Drager Ghana Ltd., emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing neonatal care in Nigeria through advanced technology and specialized training.
Dr. Peter Ubuane, a Consultant Paediatrician at LASUTH, expressed gratitude for Drager’s support, noting that it would strengthen the launch of the Center for Advanced Neonatal Studies and elevate the standard of neonatal care while expanding training capacity.
The establishment of the Center for Advanced Neonatal Studies adds to the six training institutions at LASUTH within two years, underscoring the hospital’s dedication to healthcare innovation and capacity building. This latest initiative is set to have a significant impact on advancing neonatal care not only in Nigeria but also in the broader region.
