Minister calls for research institutions, livestock industry collaboration

The call for enhanced collaboration between research institutions and the livestock industry to boost productivity and tackle challenges was emphasized by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha.

This statement was made by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Ben Goong.

During a meeting with the management team of the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science, Maiha stressed the importance of research outcomes benefiting field practitioners directly.

Maiha urged the institute to commercialize its research findings, obtain patents, and ensure they are applicable to the market, particularly farms and ranches, to address practical challenges faced by practitioners.

The minister highlighted the significance of aligning scientific progress with industry requirements to foster growth and innovation in the livestock sector.

Drawing from his own experience as a herder and farmer, Maiha shared his background.

“With 19 years of experience managing crops and overseeing up to 300 cattle, focusing on quality breeding,” he mentioned.

His practical knowledge, he stated, would aid in bridging the gap between research institutions and those directly involved in livestock production.

Maiha also encouraged more direct engagement between NIAS and field practitioners.

“It is crucial to interact more closely with herders and farmers rather than staying aloof. This is the path we need to take to drive significant change in the livestock sector,” he emphasized.

The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to revamping the livestock industry, especially through enhancing veterinary services for better animal health.

“Our goal is to transform the sector, utilizing modern methods to ensure food security and eliminate poverty. Nigeria is open to investments, and we are keen on exploring collaborations, especially with Brazil,” Maiha stated.

Established in 2008 under the NIAS Act of 2007, the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science is tasked with regulating animal husbandry practices, enhancing production systems, and promoting environmental sustainability.

The minister stressed that the Institute’s activities should directly impact the lives of Nigerians.

“Our research and services must align with the people’s aspirations and promote modern techniques for sustainable livestock development,” Maiha emphasized.
