The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported an increase in suspected Lassa fever cases in the country, reaching 7,973 with 982 confirmed cases. These cases were spread across 127 Local Government Areas in 28 states from January to August 25, 2024. A total of 168 deaths, including 17 probable, were recorded, resulting in a case fatality rate of 17.1%. Additionally, 34 healthcare workers have been affected by the outbreak.
The Director General of the center highlighted various response activities undertaken, such as workshops, webinars, and meetings to address the Lassa fever outbreak. Efforts have been made to engage with political leaders for support and resources, as well as to enhance risk communication and community engagement strategies.
Future action plans include intensifying prevention messages through local radio and TV stations, enhancing operational readiness in states, conducting environmental sanitation in hotspot areas, and deploying response teams and staff to support outbreak interventions.
It is crucial for Nigerians to follow recommended precautions to prevent the spread of Lassa fever and protect themselves from the disease.
