A non-governmental organisation, Kids and Teen Resource Centre, has intensified grassroots voter education in Ekiti State ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
A contact person in the organisation, Dr Gbenga Adesunloro, who said efforts were being made to dissuade vote-buying in the election, said that a focus of the voter education programme was pointing out the dangers of vote-buying and selling during elections.
Adesunloro, a Strategic Knowledge Management and Monitoring and Evaluating Specialist with K&TRC, in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, spoke on a 10-day mobilisation exercise embarked upon by the organisation at Ekiti West Local Government Area, in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He said, “The grassroots voter education engagement initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic participation and ensure informed, violence-free elections in Ekiti State.
“With a few days to the June 20, 2026, Ekiti State governorship election, the K&TRC, in collaboration with INEC, has intensified grassroots voter education across Ekiti West Local Government Area, reaching over 1,600 residents through community sensitisation campaigns.
“The 10-day mobilisation exercise covered Aramoko, Erijinyan, Erio, Ipole, Okemesi and Ikogosi communities, engaging market women, transport workers, artisans, traditional rulers, religious leaders and security agencies on peaceful participation and the dangers of vote-buying.”
He hailed the residents and traders at Aramoko Market, where over 600 people participated in open voter education sessions and massive outreach.
According to him, the initiative also secured the backing of traditional institutions, culminating in a stakeholders’ meeting attended by over 80 chiefs and community leaders from 18 communities in Aramoko Kingdom, where participants pledged to mobilise residents for peaceful elections.
Adesunloro said, “The initiative also leveraged a volunteer who spoke in the Hausa language to reach the Hausa-speaking community in the local government.
“In addition to community engagements, the campaign extended to radio sensitisation to reach a wider audience across the state.”
The K&TRC is a Nigerian NGO focused on empowering youth through health, education, and rights advocacy.
