Ogun senator wants NIN, passport as alternatives to PVCs for voting

The head of the Senate Committee on Appropriation has suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission should explore different forms of identification to prevent voter exclusion during elections. This recommendation aims to enhance inclusivity and transparency in the electoral process.

He praised the recent use of National Identity Numbers and Driver’s Licences for voter identification in the ongoing local government election in Ogun State as a strategy to promote broader participation and prevent disenfranchisement.

The senator emphasized that allowing multiple forms of identification, such as passports or national identity cards, in addition to the INEC card, could improve the verification of voters’ identities. However, he noted that any changes to the current electoral law would require legal amendments to accommodate these alternative identification methods.

Despite recognizing the importance of the PVC as the only recognized form of identification by law currently, he emphasized the need for a transparent and legal process for implementing any changes to ensure the legitimacy of the electoral system.

He also praised the peaceful conduct of the election in his senatorial district and the state, highlighting the impressive turnout of voters. Commending the electoral commission for organizing a successful and accessible process, he reiterated the necessity of upholding legal procedures for any modifications in the identification methods used during elections.

The senator’s proposal for alternative identification methods aligns with similar suggestions made by civil society organizations, emphasizing the importance of utilizing national ID cards, passports, and driver’s licenses for voter verification.
