Oyo confirms four deaths in suspected Lassa fever outbreak

The Oyo State Rapid Response Team recently confirmed four deaths associated with a suspected Lassa fever outbreak in the Saki West Local Government Area. The fatalities included three males and a 32-year-old female who was preparing for her wedding. Reports indicated that the deaths occurred under mysterious circumstances in the town.

Following reports of these deaths, the team was dispatched to investigate the situation. It was discovered that an apprentice at a hospital who fell ill after returning from Iwajowa was suspected of introducing the infection. The apprentice likely transmitted the illness to colleagues and the hospital owner. Three of the deceased showed symptoms of Lassa fever, while the hospital owner exhibited fatigue and resorted to self-medication before seeking hospital care.

Extensive contact tracing was carried out, high-risk contacts were identified, and the affected hospital was closed for decontamination. Public awareness campaigns were conducted to educate the community about Lassa fever, its symptoms, and preventive measures. Health workers in the area received training on infection prevention protocols to curb the spread of the disease.

The government also engaged with local authorities and community leaders to coordinate containment efforts. The outbreak, initially in Saki West, had spread to neighboring local government areas. Containment measures were initiated in these areas, with the State Rapid Response Team leading the investigation alongside health organizations.

The team’s comprehensive investigation involved various stakeholders and aimed to address the outbreak and prevent further transmission of Lassa fever in the region.
