Protesters storm Lagos assembly, reject imposition of monarch

A group of demonstrators gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly to protest the appointment of a traditional ruler in the Ajah area. They argued that the appointment was in violation of a pending court case regarding the Obaship of Ajah and urged the government to respect the court order and maintain the current status quo.

The protesters, mainly made up of Ajah community members, displayed placards and banners to show their discontent with the government’s decision. They claimed that the only recognized chieftaincy in Ajah was that of the Baale (Olomodi) of Ajah and that appointing an Oba could result in community unrest and legal issues.

During the demonstration, the Secretary General of Ajah Community, Kazeem Odunlami, expressed that the imposition of a king in Ajah went against their cultural and traditional norms. He emphasized the importance of allowing the court to determine the rightful Oba of Ajah before any appointments are made.

The protesters also highlighted the historical leadership of the Baale of Ajah, stating that the position had been held for over 300 years. Lawmakers present at the protest assured the demonstrators that their grievances would be brought to the attention of the House for discussion during the next session, emphasizing the importance of respecting the ongoing court processes.
