Reps to hold security summit

The House of Representatives is planning to host a security summit to address the ongoing attacks by gunmen in various parts of the country. During a recent plenary session, the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the intention to hold a high-level legislative security summit later in the year. This summit aims to gather key stakeholders such as the executive, security agencies, policy experts, and civil society organizations to tackle Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.

The focus of the summit will be on implementing legislative reforms to enhance the capabilities of security institutions, promote inter-agency collaboration, and utilize intelligence effectively in combating insurgency, banditry, and other security threats. Additionally, the summit will explore strategies for community policing, border security, and the integration of advanced technology in national defense.

Speaker Abbas acknowledged the efforts of security forces in neutralizing terrorists and bandits, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries and improved intelligence sharing to restore peace in the region. He also emphasized the need for cooperation between the legislative and executive branches to deliver the benefits of democracy to Nigerians.

Before the legislative recess in July, the House achieved significant milestones by passing critical bills and conducting oversight functions that positively impacted citizens’ lives. With a focus on economic stability, youth empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and education, the House aims to prioritize economic reforms, job creation, and social welfare programs to support vulnerable populations.

The Speaker praised the approval of economic stabilisation bills by the Federal Executive Council, highlighting their role in providing relief to businesses, workers, and vulnerable groups through tax incentives and income relief measures. The House remains committed to passing laws that drive economic recovery, attract investments, and advance social welfare programs for the benefit of all Nigerians.
