Shehu Sani faults Enugu mortuary tax, says the dead can no longer rest

A recent decision by the Enugu State government to introduce a mortuary tax on corpses has sparked outrage from a former Senator. The Senator expressed concerns that the move would disrupt the peace of the deceased. The State revenue agency announced a tax of N40 to be paid by the owners of corpses that are not buried within 24 hours. The aim of this tax, according to the Executive Chairman of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, is to discourage the prolonged storage of deceased bodies in mortuaries. Owners of corpses are required to pay the tax before collecting the bodies for burial and remit the amount to the state revenue agency.
