Tinubu may merge MDAs, scrap humanitarian ministry

There are strong indications that a major cabinet reshuffle may be in the works, with the possible scrapping of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The restructuring could involve splitting, merging, or even eliminating certain portfolios and ministries. President is under mounting pressure to dismiss underperforming ministers, following a warning issued about 10 months ago. The reshuffle may go beyond just swapping portfolios, as efforts to enhance effectiveness and output are being considered.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development was created in 2019 to streamline humanitarian interventions, disaster response, and social welfare programs in response to various crises in Nigeria. Despite these intentions, the ministry has faced allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and inefficiency, particularly revolving around its former ministers.

As the reshuffle plans unfold, lobbying among cabinet members has reportedly begun, with some reaching out to influential figures to advocate for their retention. Despite these lobbying efforts, the President is expected to make decisions based on his vision for the country’s governance and efficiency.
