The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation recently introduced a two-day training program on Artificial Intelligence and robotics for Nigerian teachers and students. The event took place at the UNESCO office in Abuja and was a collaborative effort with Infinix Nigeria and Google.
During the program, UNESCO Head in Abuja, Abdourahamane Diallo, highlighted the significance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in promoting sustainable development. Diallo emphasized the role of STEM programs in developing the necessary scientific and research capabilities to address global challenges like environmental sustainability and public health.
Diallo pointed out the lack of teaching tools, outdated curricula in computer science, and inadequately equipped laboratories in many sub-Saharan African countries. He mentioned that Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and cloud computing could offer solutions to enhance STEM education.
The training aimed to tackle these challenges and enhance the AI and robotics capabilities of Nigerian teachers and students. Plans for a second phase incorporating 3D printing were also announced during the event.
The program’s vision, as shared by Infinix Nigeria’s Public Relations Manager, Oluwayemisi Ode, was to ignite the curiosity and creativity of Nigerian youth. Ode highlighted the importance of hands-on experiences in robotics and AI applications to empower the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
The initiative was applauded by the Secretary General of the UNESCO National Commission in Nigeria, Dr. Olagunju Idowu, who stressed the timeliness and relevance of the training. Recognizing the significant role of AI in various industries and daily life, the importance of AI awareness among young people was emphasized.
STEM education’s crucial role in global development was reiterated by the Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Muyibat Olodo. She emphasized the necessity for Nigerian youth to harness their technological potential for global competitiveness.
The program, supported by UNESCO, Infinix, and Google, marked a pivotal advancement in enhancing Nigeria’s AI and robotics capacity, equipping both teachers and students with the skills needed to excel in the digital era.
