Vandals strike again, stall repairs on Ahoada-Yenagoa power line – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria reported that repair work on its Ahoada-Yenagoa 132 Kilo Volt (kV) line was once again disrupted by vandals. This line was already under repair due to previous vandalism. The incident, affecting towers 29 to 31 and resulting in the theft of approximately one-third of the conductor, happened recently. TCN engineers led by Mr. Emmanuel Akpa inspected the site and found that the incident occurred at night. To prevent further theft during repairs, local security has been engaged at the site. The line will be energized from the Ahoada end as a precautionary measure. Efforts to replace the stolen conductor are ongoing despite challenges posed by difficult terrain and flooding.

In a previous incident in November, vandals attacked transmission towers along the 330kV Benin-Egbin and Benin-Omotosho lines, affecting a total of 31 towers. TCN engineers initiated repairs to prevent the collapse of these towers and maintain power supply. These incidents highlight the urgent need to address vandalism and theft that impact Nigeria’s power infrastructure significantly. TCN urges the public to support efforts to combat these crimes, which have hindered the expansion and stability of the national grid. TCN is increasing efforts to protect installations and calls on security personnel and local communities to be vigilant in safeguarding power infrastructure in their areas.
