An International Friendship League has said that the Nigeran electorate requires sound education to make the right ĺeadership choices during elections.
The group made this known during a lecture to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day where participants drawn from the academia domiciled in Niger State said that the country’s election outcome is far from desirable.
The participants in the lecture titled: “Sustainable Democracy In Nigeria present and future perspective,” Stresed that the crop of leaders the country parades has not ensured the welfare and security of the populace and by extemsion have failed to address the two basic requirements of democratic governance.
The Chairman of the International Friendship lLeague Prof Alkndele Ojo in his opening remarks disclosed that the aim of the gathering was to profer solutions to the mirade of problems militating against the country’s political advancement.
“We reflected on the democratic journey of the nation. This is both timely and relevant to critically.examine how far we have gone as a nation..
“How far have we gone in our democracy? How can we strengthen democratic governance? How can we include women and youths? The future of democracy in Nigeria is the responsibility of everyone. As we address democracy, let us renew our accountability, transparency, justice and equity,” he said.
The panel of discussants including a dean of the Federal University of Technology, FUT, Minna, Prof O Kamiki, with a lecturer of Journalism and Media Studies Mrs Joy Anyanwu of the Federal Polytechnic Bida and a lecturer of the Mass Communication Department IBB University Laipai Dr Andrew Ngene dwelt on the topic: “Sustainable Democracy In Nigeria Present and Future Perspective”.
They stressed the role of the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the power of the electorate, the need for an educated electorate, the role of women, youths and the media in a thriving democracy.
The moderator and Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration of the FUT Minna, Prof Uno Uno in his remarks noted that the essence of the lecture was to further highlight the importance of sustainable democracy to the growth and development of the country.
The keynote speaker and Regional Overseer, of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry, Suleja Region, Pastor Samuel Ndagi in his speech lamposted the importance of God in ensuring the success of man’s endeavours.
Going philosophical, he pointed out, “We must recognise the importance of God in the affairs of man. Democracy may be good but without the fear of God man will abuse it. Religious and traditional leaders must be involved in ensuring that democracy thrives in Nigeria.
“We must raise leaders with vision, value and uphold history. We must also recognise God as our nation’s source. Nations that forget God do not last. Leaders must have integrity and value. No nation becomes great where corruption is on the rise
“Values are polices. People are guided by values and for us to become great, we must abide by values and integrity. Patriotism is invaluable for the country to survive. We must uphold the principle of justice. No nation enjoys lasting peace where injustice thrives,” he admonished.
