A concerned mother, Caroline Abiodun, has raised allegations of negligence against doctors at a medical facility in Ogun State, where her 27-year-old daughter, Mofeyintoluwa Abiodun, was left paralyzed due to what she claims was a misdiagnosis.
Mofeyintoluwa, a graduate of Animal Nutrition and Biotechnology, was reportedly given incorrect treatment for malaria, worsening her condition according to Caroline.
Caroline recounted the distressing experience, expressing her disappointment in the hospital’s role in her daughter’s paralysis.
“In January 2021, my daughter was diagnosed with malaria and typhoid fever. We sought treatment at the medical facility where she was attended to by a doctor who prescribed medication and recommended an MRI scan.
“However, her health deteriorated rapidly after taking the prescribed drugs, leading to weakness and skin rashes. Subsequent prescriptions included topiramate, a medication for epilepsy, which caused severe side effects such as involuntary shaking and eventual paralysis,” Caroline explained.
Caroline revealed the emotional and financial strain her family has endured due to extensive medical costs, with little support from the hospital despite interventions from authorities.
“My daughter, once healthy and independent, is now reliant on assistance for basic tasks. The hospital has shown reluctance to acknowledge their role in her current state, even resorting to threats when confronted,” she added.
When approached for a response, the hospital’s representative denied any wrongdoing in Mofeyintoluwa’s case, stating that there was no misdiagnosis or incorrect treatment.
