With only two days to go, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will usher in a new era for international football as the tournament expands to 48 teams and is jointly hosted by three countries for the first time in history: Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The competition, widely regarded as the world’s premier international football tournament, will run from June to July 2026, with the final scheduled for Sunday, 19 July 2026, in New York/New Jersey.

The opening match will be played on Thursday, 11 June 2026, in Mexico City.

News rules and regulations

FIFA has introduced new rules that will guide the tournament. These include red cards for walk-off protests and permission for players to wear previously prohibited items under specified conditions.

The 2026 World Cup has made history with a record 18-track album. Four of Nigeria’s biggest music stars — Davido, Burna Boy, Rema, and Ayra Starr — were unveiled as part of the official soundtrack album.

Official match ball and mascots

The official match ball, named adidas TRIONDA, was unveiled on 2 October 2025. The name means “three waves,” reflecting the three host nations, with design elements featuring red, green and blue colours.

The official mascots were unveiled in September 2025: Maple™ the Moose (Canada), Zayu™ the Jaguar (Mexico), and Clutch™ the Bald Eagle (United States).

Tournament significance

The 2026 edition marks the first time the World Cup will be hosted by three countries and the first time it will feature 48 teams. Argentina, winners of the 2022 edition, will aim to defend their title.
