Yobe, labour unions seal N70,000 minimum wage deal

The Yobe State Government and organized labor in the state have reached an agreement to implement the new national minimum wage of N70,000, effective from December 2024.

The Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the N70,000 Minimum Wage Committee, Baba Wali, shared that after thorough negotiations, the committee proposed the wage increase to Governor Mai Mala Buni, who gave approval for the new pay structure.

Following this development, the Yobe State Government has approved the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for all state civil servants, pensioners, and individuals under special salary structures, starting from December 2024.

Despite the National Labor Congress (NLC) national body’s call for a nationwide strike, Yobe State workers have decided not to participate due to the agreement with the state government.

A signing ceremony took place in Damaturu, attended by key government officials and labor leaders, such as the Head of Civil Service, Permanent Secretary of Public Service, Accountant General, and the Yobe State NLC Chairman.

The Yobe NLC Chairman assured workers that the agreement ensures their welfare, confirming that they will not engage in a strike as they are committed to the N70,000 minimum wage implementation. However, there is a temporary postponement for local government employees pending resolution of issues with certain local governments.

In conclusion, the union encourages civil servants to continue their regular activities, expressing confidence in the government’s dedication to fulfilling the agreement. Any circulating information regarding a statewide strike has been debunked as false and baseless. Earlier, a 10-member committee was formed by the state government to address the implementation of the new national minimum wage for civil servants, subsequent to its approval by the Federal Government. This came after previous denials of media reports suggesting the commencement of the new minimum wage payment in August, clarifying that such claims were inaccurate and misleading.
