Benue govt set to enact electricity law

The government of Benue State is currently in the process of developing a new electricity law to oversee the state’s energy sector. The Commissioner for Transport, Renewable Energy, and Power, Mr Omale Omale, mentioned that a draft of the bill is undergoing review at the Ministry of Justice before being presented to the state executive council. Once approved, the bill will be forwarded to the House of Assembly as an executive bill.

The primary objective of the proposed law is to cater to the energy requirements of communities in Benue State that currently lack adequate electricity access. These communities are classified as underserved or unserved, depending on their existing electricity infrastructure. Mr. Omale emphasized the ministry’s commitment to addressing the energy needs of all residents in the state.

The new Electricity Act grants states the authority to participate in the energy market, including the generation, distribution, and regulation of electricity within their respective jurisdictions. Residents like Mrs. Jennifer Tema, a restaurant owner, and Dennis Tyosula, who runs a computer center and betting shop, expressed the challenges they face due to the unreliable power supply. Mrs. Tema highlighted significant losses incurred from perishable goods during power outages, while Mr. Tyosula mentioned the financial strain of constantly running generators to keep his businesses operational. The hope is that with the implementation of alternative energy sources, such as those proposed in the new law, these issues can be mitigated for business owners and residents across the state.
