President Bola Tinubu has recently made his way to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20). His arrival on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time was met with a warm reception by Amb. Breno Costa from the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil. Accompanying him were various ministers and officials including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Livestock Development, the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
During his visit, Tinubu is slated to engage in bilateral discussions regarding Nigeria’s ongoing socio-economic reforms on the sidelines of the summit. The summit, hosted by the President of Brazil, will focus on sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, as well as address global governance reform. Key topics on the agenda include climate change, the digital economy, and geopolitical issues like the Israel–Hamas conflict and the U.S.-China relations.
The conclusion of the G20 rotating presidency’s work is traditionally presented at the annual summit, where global leaders ratify agreements and strategize on addressing worldwide challenges. The G20 summit is expected to draw representatives from 19 member countries, featuring discussions on combating hunger, poverty, and inequality. Additionally, representatives from the African Union and the European Union have been invited to attend the summit by the organizers.
The Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria extended the invitation to Tinubu during a formal presentation of credentials, emphasizing Brazil’s focus on food security and the eradication of extreme poverty by 2030 as part of the summit’s objectives.
