Metamo Sports, the organizers of the recently concluded Lagos Liga football tournament, have revealed plans for a new competition named the Metamo Naija Cup 2025. This tournament will be distinct from the previous N50m winner-take-all event and will take place in 2025.
The seven-a-side Lagos Liga amateur football tournament concluded on December 27, 2024, with Abuja-based Primal Sporting FC emerging as the champions. In a thrilling final, they defeated Applebee FC 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
An awards ceremony and dinner were held for the 16 participating clubs and standout players at the Civic Centre on Lagos Island on December 30.
During the event, League Commissioner Sandra Omoniyi announced the introduction of the Metamo Naija Cup 2025, emphasizing the league’s commitment to promoting sports excellence and community engagement.
Primal Sporting FC not only clinched the tournament title but also dominated the individual awards, with goalkeeper Sunday Stephen named best keeper and striker Aliyu Tafida securing the highest goal scorer accolade.
Applebee FC’s David Onuche stood out as the tournament’s MVP, showcasing remarkable performance with three goals and 10 assists.
The tournament’s best players, including Precious Meindinyo, Favour Anieke, Ramon Ishola, Hassan Abba, and Oladepo Ripper, were also recognized for their exceptional contributions.
Omoniyi highlighted the significance of the tournament beyond the games played, emphasizing the importance of the relationships formed and the dreams inspired throughout the competition.
The Lagos Liga tournament, which took place from December 6 to 27, featured the use of video assistant referees, adding to the excitement and intensity of the matches.
