AI, digital technologies threatening information integrity, UN warns

The United Nations recently addressed the challenges posed by the rise of artificial intelligence and rapid digital technology growth on truth and information integrity. During a high-level briefing, the United Nations Information Centre in Nigeria emphasized the threats of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in the digital era. The event, led by UNIC Director Ronald Kayanja and attended by numerous partner organizations, highlighted the risks associated with AI-driven content creation and dissemination. Kayanja stressed the importance of combating these challenges through collaboration among governments, civil society organizations, and stakeholders using tools like the Global Principles for Information Integrity and the Global Digital Compact. The Executive Director of Mind The Gap Initiative, Tayo Olosunde, advocated for increased technology use by CSOs to promote inclusivity and diverse participation. The briefing also discussed UNIC’s priorities for 2025, including milestones like the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, and the 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals.
