The Federal Government has recently initiated a program in Zaria, Kaduna State, to convert 50 vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas initiative. This step is anticipated to revolutionize Nigeria’s transportation sector by offering reduced fuel expenses and improved efficiency.
The leader of the CNG conversion initiative at the National Institute for Transport Technology Centre, Dauda Suleiman, mentioned that the initiative is providing free conversion kits and installation for the first 50 commercial drivers. The beneficiaries encompass members of various transport unions in Nigeria.
Suleiman highlighted the cost-effectiveness of CNG compared to petrol, citing its lower price and ability to cover more distance. He assured that efforts are being made to ensure the initiative is accessible to all, with plans to expand CNG availability by establishing more refilling stations.
Moreover, Suleiman emphasized the minimal maintenance requirements of CNG, stating its durability and offering training programs for mechanics. He stressed the importance of public awareness and education for the success of the initiative, portraying CNG as a pivotal aspect of Nigeria’s transportation future.
The Chairman of the Zaria branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers of Nigeria praised the Federal Government’s conversion initiative, recognizing its potential to reduce operating costs for commercial vehicle owners and benefit the economy. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to their members and highlighted the positive impact of CNG conversion on transport fares and economic benefits.
In conclusion, the initiative aims to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal by promoting the adoption of CNG as a cleaner and more affordable fuel alternative. It aligns with the government’s efforts to facilitate a smoother transition to a sustainable energy future.
