AGF urges elites to vote, strengthen democracy

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice emphasized the importance of active participation from the elite in fostering democracy within the country. He delivered this message during a lecture at the University of Ilorin’s 39th Convocation, stressing the significance of the elite’s role in shaping the democratic process through voting during elections. The need for reform in the education system was also highlighted to cultivate democratic values within society.

The legal expert underscored the urgency of overhauling Nigeria’s educational system to instill democratic principles such as tolerance, respect, and adherence to the rule of law. He emphasized that education plays a crucial role in shaping citizens’ understanding of democracy as a concept centered on engagement, transparency, and cooperation.

Furthermore, the Attorney General emphasized the interdependence of education and democracy, advocating for a revised curriculum that promotes justice, equality, and freedom to foster a more united and just society. He urged graduating students to utilize their knowledge for the betterment of society, champion democracy, and contribute positively to the progress of Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN echoed the sentiment that education is fundamental for a democratic society, emphasizing its role in empowering citizens to hold their leaders accountable and uphold values of integrity and transparency.
