ASUU backs Tinubu as UNIZIK VC rejects sacking

The Academic Staff Union of Universities recently expressed approval of the decision made by a notable figure to dismiss the embattled vice-chancellor and governing board of a university in Anambra State. The union criticized the appointment of the vice-chancellor and raised concerns about his qualifications not meeting the required standards. The controversy surrounding the vice-chancellor’s appointment led to disagreements within ASUU and a warning strike by the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria.

The President’s intervention resulted in the dissolution of the governing council and the removal of the vice-chancellor and registrar. However, the former vice-chancellor contested his removal process, insisting on proper investigation and due process before his dismissal. Allegations and counterclaims about his qualifications and appointment process were brought to light, with ASUU highlighting inconsistencies in his academic history.

ASUU emphasized the importance of merit-based appointments and professional integrity in selecting candidates for leadership positions. The reinstatement of an acting vice-chancellor was announced following the nullification of the former vice-chancellor’s appointment. The university authorities reinstated the acting vice-chancellor and appointed a new acting registrar to assume administrative responsibilities immediately. These decisions were made in accordance with directives from the Ministry of Education and the President.
