Controversial figure, Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, is facing potential new legal challenges following allegations that he avoided serving his jail term in a proper facility and bribed officials to drop money laundering charges against him. An investigation panel was formed to look into these claims and recommended that Bobrisky should face defamation and criminal charges.
Bobrisky had been sentenced to six months in prison for currency abuse and was released in August. Claims surfaced that he bribed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officers and prison officials with N15m to avoid consequences. The panel’s report found no evidence to support Bobrisky’s claim of being housed outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre during his sentence, and recommended further investigations into the bribery allegations.
The panel also recommended disciplinary actions against correctional officers involved in improper transfers and handling of Bobrisky’s case. It suggested an audit of all inmates and detainees, as well as reforms to improve the conditions and oversight in custodial centers. The case has prompted discussions about the treatment of individuals with different gender identities and orientations within Nigeria’s legal and prison systems.
Activists are advocating for the recognition and respect of human rights for crossdressers and transgender individuals, urging the government to provide suitable facilities and accommodations for them. They emphasize the need for sensitivity and reforms within the prison system to ensure the humane treatment and rights of all inmates, regardless of their sexual orientation. Concerns have been raised about the lack of clarity in the government’s stance on such issues, calling for a more inclusive and considerate approach towards individuals like Bobrisky.
