Embrace reading culture, Lagos deputy gov urges students

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State encouraged schoolchildren to adopt a habit of reading to achieve success. This call was made during a book reading program for secondary school students in Lagos State, organized by TotalEnergies. The event, which took place at the company’s office in Lagos, saw participation from students of over ten secondary schools in the state. The goal of the event was to promote a culture of reading among the youth.

The theme of the 2024 Book Reading and Open Day was ‘The World is a Maze: Navigate it – Read.’ The Deputy Governor, represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, expressed concern that children today are less inclined towards reading due to distractions from social media. He emphasized the importance of reading for learning, discovery, and personal growth.

Acknowledging the declining interest in reading among children, the Deputy Governor commended TotalEnergies for instilling the value of reading and writing in the younger generation. He urged the students to cultivate a natural interest in reading, highlighting the benefits of developing analytical and reasoning skills through regular reading.

The Deputy Governor encouraged students to establish book reading clubs in their schools and promised government support in donating books to schools in need. He stressed the role of reading in fostering values, respect, and self-improvement for a brighter future.

TotalEnergies’ Deputy Managing Director of Deep Water Assets emphasized the significance of reading for information, direction, and character development. He urged students to take advantage of electronic books and technological devices to enhance their reading experience.
