IG bans Amotekun, vigilante from Ondo poll, warns against violence

The Inspector General of Police has issued a directive prohibiting the Western Nigeria Security Network known as Amotekun and Vigilante Corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo governorship election. The election, scheduled for November 16, 2024, will involve 17 political parties.

In a statement released by the Force spokesperson, it was revealed that various specialized police units, such as the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and others, will be deployed for election security. Aerial patrols with police helicopters and gunboats patrolling waterways will be conducted to ensure security during the election.

The Inspector General assured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s preparedness for a peaceful election process in all areas of Ondo State. Comprehensive plans have been put in place to deploy personnel, resources, and equipment to guarantee a smooth election. The deployment will involve collaboration with other security agencies and strict adherence to the Electoral Act guidelines.

Additionally, a strong warning was issued to potential troublemakers or political thugs planning to disrupt the election. The Inspector General emphasized that only federal security agencies and members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security would be permitted to participate in the electoral process.

The Nigeria Police Force, in conjunction with other federal security agencies, is dedicated to ensuring the Ondo State Gubernatorial Election proceeds without any disturbances, maintaining the highest standards of electoral integrity.
