Lagos youths are set to be mobilised for participation in the 2027 general elections across the state’s 57 local government areas and local council development areas, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, has said.
The council disclosed this after its 2026 annual congress in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, where delegates also adopted a new by-law to formalise its structure, accountability mechanisms and operations across the state.
The council’s State Chairman, Ibrahim Adigun, said the mobilisation would form part of efforts to increase youth participation in the electoral process, while ensuring that the council remained an organised platform for young people across Lagos.
The congress was attended by delegates from the 57 local government and local council development areas, as well as representatives of affiliated voluntary youth organisations and community-based organisations.
The council said the by-law, adopted after its presentation and review by delegates, would establish clearer procedures for leadership succession, internal democracy and accountability.
Adigun said the framework was particularly important because of the diversity of Lagos’ youth population, which includes students, entrepreneurs, professionals, artisans, creatives and community leaders.
“Lagos has a diverse and dynamic youth population, comprising students, young entrepreneurs, professionals, artisans, creatives, community leaders and young people across different social and economic backgrounds.
“Our by-law provides a common institutional framework through which these diverse youth demographics can find representation, participate meaningfully in decision-making and contribute to the development of the state.
“It is about ensuring that every youth voice matters, regardless of background, location or affiliation,” he said.
He said the council’s objective was to build an institution that would outlast individual administrations and provide continuity in youth representation across Lagos.
“Our objective is to build an institution that is bigger than any individual or administration.
“This by-law will promote continuity, strengthen internal democracy, define responsibilities, establish accountability mechanisms and provide clear guidelines for leadership succession and the operations of the Council.
“We are laying a foundation that future generations of youth leaders can build upon.
“We want to ensure that NYCN Lagos remains a credible, inclusive and accountable umbrella platform for youth development across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas,” Adigun said.
The council said the by-law was developed after consultations with stakeholders in the youth sector and in line with the NYCN national constitution.
The document was presented to delegates by the Chairman of the By-Law Drafting and Review Committee, Adewole Saliu, before a motion for its adoption was moved by the Coordinator of Egbe-Idimu Local Branch, Moshood Shittu, and seconded by Azeez Asiwaju of the Nigeria Aid Group.
The council said the new framework was intended to strengthen its institutional capacity while giving Lagos youths a more structured platform for representation and participation in affairs affecting the state.
