NANS warns against hike in tuition fees

The National Association of Nigerian Students has raised concerns about the possibility of universities in the country increasing tuition fees. In a statement released by the Senate President of NANS in Ibadan, Oyo State, the organization strongly criticized the moves by certain Vice Chancellors to raise fees. NANS is determined to work diligently to persuade the government to revoke these decisions.

The Senate President of NANS expressed displeasure over the proposed tuition fee hikes by some Vice Chancellors of various universities, including the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ibadan. These actions are seen as attempts to disrupt the implementation of the Federal Government’s new Student Loan Scheme.

The Student Loan Scheme, according to NANS, aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Nigerian students and their families in accessing quality education. NANS called on the government to investigate and take action against the Vice Chancellors who are impeding educational progress.

The students urged President Tinubu to intervene and remove Vice Chancellors who are working against the objective of providing accessible education through the Student Loan Scheme. They emphasized that any attempt to increase fees under the guise of institutional development or financial constraints is unjustifiable and will not be accepted by the Nigerian student community.

Nigerian students, along with parents and education stakeholders, are encouraged to stand against unwarranted fee increments. The focus should be on making education affordable and inclusive for all, rather than exploiting it for financial gain. NANS remains dedicated to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring the successful implementation of the Student Loan Scheme without unnecessary obstacles.
