The head of Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS recently advised pregnant women to register for Antenatal Care and undergo an HIV test to know their status. This call was made during a campaign in Ibadan to mark World AIDS Day. Nigeria plays a significant role in the global HIV burden, especially concerning new child HIV infections. It was noted that Nigeria has the third-largest HIV burden globally, with a prevalence of 2.9% among pregnant women. Pregnant women were encouraged to get tested for HIV at least twice during pregnancy to receive proper treatment if needed.
The chairman stressed the importance of inclusive efforts to address HIV, especially among vulnerable populations. This year’s World AIDS Day theme focused on sustaining the HIV response and preventing HIV among children. OYSACA organized various activities throughout the week to commemorate the day. It was emphasized that people living with chronic diseases, including HIV/AIDS, should not face stigma but rather receive support and care. Discrimination and exclusion were highlighted as significant challenges for those affected by the disease.
Efforts to protect everyone’s right to health and reduce new infections were seen as crucial in achieving an AIDS-free generation. The public was encouraged to utilize free HIV testing services available during World AIDS Day to work towards ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.
