The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has announced strict measures against airlines responsible for luggage delays. The regulatory agency plans to enforce fines on both foreign and local airlines for delayed luggage, with penalties set at $170 for foreign airlines and N10,000 for local carriers. Passengers affected by missing luggage on domestic flights can claim up to $1,000, while international flight passengers are eligible for $1,288 in compensation.
During a recent roadshow at the Lagos airport, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection for NCAA emphasized the importance of passenger awareness regarding their rights. The agency aims to educate travelers on their entitlements under NCAA regulations and where to address grievances. The initiative seeks to empower passengers to demand compensation for delayed or missing luggage, ensuring airlines adhere to regulations and uphold consumer rights.
To facilitate complaints, the NCAA has introduced a user-friendly website to streamline passenger feedback and increase accountability among airlines. The roadshow initiative will extend to airports in Abuja and Port Harcourt, enhancing passenger knowledge and engagement with regulatory protocols. An executive summary revealed statistics on missing baggage cases among various foreign carriers, emphasizing the significance of addressing luggage mishandling in the aviation industry.
