Police re-arrest another fleeing Borno convict

The Borno State Police Command has successfully re-apprehended a convict, Auwalu Aminu, who escaped from a correctional facility in Maiduguri due to severe flooding in September. The convict, aged 24, had been serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri when the flooding caused the facility’s fence to collapse, enabling Aminu to escape.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Nahum Daso, Aminu was captured on October 16, 2024, in Banki town by police officers from Bama Area Command/Banki Divisional Headquarters based on a tip-off. The authorities swiftly acted on the information and re-arrested Aminu, who will be returned to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further proceedings.

This incident is part of the escape of over 281 inmates from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre during the flooding. Aminu’s recapture marks the third successful apprehension of escaped convicts, following the earlier arrests of Abubakar Mohammed and Kyari Kur, who also fled during the flooding.
