Pope Leo honours late Pope Francis on first death anniversary

One year after the passing of Pope Francis, his successor, Pope Leo XIV, has called on the global Catholic community to remain steadfast in the mission of mercy and fraternity that defined the previous pontificate.

In a tribute shared via X on Tuesday, Pope Leo commemorated what he described as the “birth into heaven” of the late Pope.

He wrote, “On the first anniversary of the birth into heaven of our dear #PopeFrancis, his words and actions remain written in our hearts.

“We carry on his legacy by always proclaiming the joy of the Gospel, announcing God’s mercy, and promoting fraternity among all men and women.”

reports that Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

Following Francis’ passing, Robert Francis Prevost, the first American to be elected to the papacy, was chosen as his successor in May 2025, taking the name Leo XIV.
