The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities are set to begin an indefinite strike starting Sunday night. The decision comes after the ultimatum given by the unions to the Federal Government regarding the withheld salaries, which is set to expire at midnight on Sunday.
Among their demands are the payment of the four-month withheld salaries, improved compensation, earned allowances, and the implementation of agreements made with the government in 2009. The Federal Government had previously implemented the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during a previous strike by university-based unions in 2022.
The unions urge their members in universities and inter-university centers nationwide to convene for a joint congress on Monday, 28th October, 2024. They are instructed to embark on an indefinite, comprehensive, and total strike action until their demands are met. The directive also extends to state-owned universities to align with the strike action as necessary. Strict compliance with this directive is mandatory for all branches of NASU and SSANU in both federal and state-owned universities as well as inter-university centers.
