A recent survey conducted by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development has highlighted concerns regarding public trust in the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states. The survey aimed to assess public perceptions of electoral institutions and readiness to participate in the off-cycle elections.
According to the survey, only 36 percent of the respondents expressed confidence in the fairness of the elections, with an equal percentage doubting the judiciary’s ability to impartially resolve any disputes that may arise from the polls. This lack of trust in the electoral process and institutions could potentially impact voter turnout and overall engagement.
The survey also revealed low levels of political engagement among voters, with only 25 percent of respondents identifying as active members of political parties. Many voters questioned whether political parties truly represent their interests, which could lead to decreased participation in the upcoming elections.
Media coverage of the elections was another area of concern, with some respondents perceiving bias or indifference in reporting. Additionally, a significant number of respondents relied on social media for election information, raising fears of misinformation spreading as election day approaches.
In response to these findings, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development has called for immediate reforms to restore public confidence in the electoral process. Recommendations include comprehensive voter education campaigns, integrating electoral education into school curricula, adopting election technologies, and reforming the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The report also emphasizes the need for media organizations to combat misinformation and promote balanced election reporting, as well as implementing Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to simplify the election petition process. The survey, which gathered responses from 2,156 participants in Edo and Ondo States, utilized both online and offline methods to ensure inclusivity across different demographics.
