A committee comprising 21 members has been established by the Kwara State Government to enforce laws against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence aimed at safeguarding females in the state. During the 2024 Girl Child Day celebration in Ilorin, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, emphasized the government’s dedication to upholding the dignity of girls in the region.
The committee’s formation serves as a stern warning to society, ensuring the protection of girls’ rights and the prosecution of offenders, regardless of their societal status. Efforts to combat the marginalization of girls must persist until universal understanding and adherence to their rights are achieved, ultimately creating a more equitable world for all.
The state governor, represented by the Commissioner for Health, highlighted various initiatives taken by the government, including the enactment of laws and the establishment of specialized healthcare facilities for women. Laws such as the Child Rights Law, Violence Against Persons and Prohibition (VAPP), and Gender Composition Law have been enforced to secure compulsory education for children and shield them from any form of violence or discrimination. Perpetrators of sexual offenses have been brought to justice, and referral centers have been set up to aid victims of SGBV.
The governor urged the public to prioritize girls’ education, emphasizing that empowering them is crucial for global progress. He called for an end to discrimination against girls, noting their potential for success across various fields. The first lady of Kwara State reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the development of the girl child in the region.
