A commotion broke out at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, where students expressed their anger by setting the Provost’s residence on fire and damaging his vehicle. The students were upset over allegations that the college management had taken N23m from them for index registration related to a new Public Health program. This program was merged with the Department of Environmental Health, requiring an additional N65,000 from each student, on top of the N30,000 already paid.
The protest turned violent as students accused the management of extortion, leading to vandalism and setting the Provost’s residence ablaze. Despite the chaos, the Provost denied the allegations, calling them baseless and fictitious. He refuted claims of course duplications and extortion, stating that the accusations were unfounded.
Security personnel arrived at the scene as some staff members fled in fear. The Provost urged for calm and assured that the management was cooperating with authorities to address the situation. Eventually, peace was restored at the college after security agencies intervened and dispersed the protesters.
The Kebbi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer mentioned that more information would be shared once details from the Divisional Police Officer in Jega were available.
