Tight security as Plateau holds LG poll

Security measures have been heightened in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, and its surroundings as the State Independent Electoral Commission conducts local government elections. The elections are being held in all 17 local government areas of the state to elect new chairmen and councillors.

There is a visible presence of security forces, including Armoured Personnel Carriers from the police bomb squad, at key locations in Jos. Security personnel are stationed at strategic points, notably around the PLSIEC headquarters, to ensure a smooth electoral process. Major roads leading to and from Jos have also been closed off by security officers since early morning to maintain peace and order during the elections.

Individuals, including journalists, are undergoing thorough searches at security checkpoints before being allowed to pass through. A security officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that their primary goal is to uphold law and order during the electoral process.

PLSIEC Chairman, Plangji Cishak, has expressed the commission’s dedication to conducting a credible election. Cishak emphasized their commitment to a free and fair election, highlighting the support received from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who has respected the commission’s operational independence.

Voting has already begun in the local government areas under tight security supervision.
